John Ballard Death : With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of John Ballard, a beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, who peacefully departed on December 3, 2024, in Cornelia, Georgia, at the age of 76. While his family and friends mourn his loss, we take comfort in knowing that his legacy of love, kindness, and integrity will forever remain in our hearts.
John was born on January 12, 1948, in Cornelia, Georgia, to the late Richard and Helen Ballard. He was raised in this close-knit town, where he spent his entire life, building deep connections within the community. John was a man who valued his heritage and embraced life’s simple joys. His warm, welcoming nature allowed him to connect with others easily, and he brought light wherever he went.
A graduate of Habersham Central High School, John was known for his hard work and dedication. After high school, he began his career in the construction industry, where his attention to detail and commitment to excellence earned him a reputation as a master craftsman. He was proud to contribute to numerous projects that shaped the landscape of his hometown, but his greatest pride came from the relationships he forged along the way. Over the years, John became a trusted colleague and dear friend to many in the community.
John’s greatest passion, however, was his family. In 1970, he married the love of his life, Mary Jane, and together they raised two children, Sarah and Matthew, who were the center of his world. John’s devotion to his family was unwavering. Whether it was sharing meals, attending school events, or taking family vacations, John always put his loved ones first. His commitment to Mary Jane and their children served as a shining example of love and loyalty. As a grandfather, his love expanded further, and he found immeasurable joy in his five grandchildren—Olivia, Ethan, Lily, Noah, and Grace. He cherished every moment with them, whether teaching them to fish at the family cabin or sharing stories from his own childhood.
In addition to his family, John was an active and dedicated member of the Cornelia First Baptist Church. His faith was the cornerstone of his life, and he was a steadfast volunteer, supporting numerous outreach programs in the community. His belief in kindness, humility, and service to others shaped his daily actions, and he found peace knowing his life had a greater purpose. John enjoyed many hobbies, including gardening, fishing, hunting, and woodworking. His passion for nurturing life was evident in his vibrant garden, where he spent countless hours tending to flowers and vegetables. He found solace in the outdoors, often retreating to the family cabin to reflect in nature’s peace. A man with a great sense of humor, John was known for his infectious laughter and positive attitude, which brought joy to all who knew him. Whether sharing a cup of coffee with a neighbor or lending a helping hand, his genuine care for others was evident in everything he did.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Helen Ballard, and his brother, Samuel Ballard. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Mary Jane Ballard; his children, Sarah (David) Thompson of Cornelia and Matthew (Lauren) Ballard of Athens, Georgia; his grandchildren, Olivia, Ethan, Lily, Noah, and Grace; his sister, Margaret (Jerry) Lawson of Cornelia; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends. A service celebrating John’s life will be held on Thursday, December 5, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Cornelia First Baptist Church, with the Reverend Robert Young officiating. Visitation will take place on Wednesday evening, December 4, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will follow the service at Yonah Memorial Gardens in Cornelia.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in John’s memory to the Cornelia First Baptist Church or the American Cancer Society. These gifts will honor John’s legacy of faith, service, and compassion. John was more than just a neighbor, colleague, or family member—he was a true friend to all. His legacy will be one of selflessness, kindness, and integrity, and we will carry the lessons he taught us, the laughter he shared, and the love he gave so freely. Though he is no longer with us in person, John’s spirit will continue to inspire and guide us.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to the Ballard family during this incredibly difficult time. John’s impact on the lives of those around him was immeasurable, and his absence leaves a profound void in all our hearts. May you find comfort in the cherished memories of John and the love and support of your community. His legacy will live on in the kindness he spread, the lives he touched, and the countless ways he made the world a better place. Rest in peace, John—you will be dearly missed but never forgotten.
