Barbara Zheng Death: It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Barbara Zheng, a vibrant and intelligent 14-year-old student at Charles E. Brown Middle School in Newton, Massachusetts. Barbara left us far too soon on December 3, 2024, leaving behind a profound legacy of kindness, passion, and promise.
Barbara was born on June 5, 2010, in Newton, MA, the daughter of Yang and Lian Zheng. She was the youngest of two siblings, and in her short 14 years, she touched the lives of all who knew her. Barbara’s infectious smile, her loving nature, and her determination to excel made her a joy to be around. She was the kind of student whose presence lit up a room, always ready to help others, and always striving to be her best.
Barbara was an avid learner, and her enthusiasm for school was contagious. As a student at Charles E. Brown Middle School, she excelled academically, particularly in math and science, where her teachers praised her for her dedication and intellectual curiosity. She was an active member of the school’s robotics club, where she not only contributed her technical skills but also inspired her peers with her leadership. Her curiosity extended beyond the classroom as well. She had a deep love for reading, often delving into novels of various genres, from fantasy to history, always eager to learn something new.
Barbara had a remarkable ability to connect with people from all walks of life. She had an innate sense of empathy and always went out of her way to make others feel seen and heard. She was known for her kindness, whether it was offering a comforting word to a friend or volunteering to help a classmate who was struggling with a lesson. Barbara made it her mission to include everyone and to spread positivity, no matter the circumstances.
Outside of school, Barbara loved spending time with her family. Her parents, Yang and Lian, were the center of her world, and she always expressed her gratitude for the love and support they provided her. She also had a special bond with her older brother, Kevin, and the two shared many fond memories of their childhood, from playing games together to exploring nature. The Zheng family’s home was always filled with laughter, love, and a sense of togetherness that was so special to Barbara.
Barbara’s love for nature was another defining aspect of her character. She loved going on hikes with her family, marveling at the beauty of the world around her. Whether it was walking through the woods, visiting the beach, or simply enjoying the beauty of a garden, Barbara had a unique appreciation for the natural world. Her interest in environmental issues was a reflection of her desire to make a positive impact on the world, and she was always advocating for ways to help preserve the environment.
Barbara was also a talented musician, playing the piano with grace and passion. She began taking piano lessons at a young age and quickly developed a deep love for music. Her ability to convey emotion through her playing was extraordinary, and she would often perform for family and friends. Music was an important outlet for Barbara, offering her a space to express herself and connect with others on a deeper level.
Her untimely passing has left a hole in the hearts of her family, friends, teachers, and all who knew her. Barbara was a bright light in this world, and her loss is felt deeply by the entire Newton community. However, it is important to remember that Barbara’s legacy lives on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her kindness, her generosity, and her love of learning will continue to inspire those she leaves behind. The world is a better place because of her, and we will forever carry her memory with us.
Barbara is survived by her parents, Yang and Lian Zheng; her brother, Kevin Zheng; her paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Zheng; her maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Li; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends who will miss her dearly. A memorial service will be held in Barbara’s honor at the Newton Congregational Church on December 8, 2024, at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Barbara Zheng Memorial Fund, which will support environmental conservation and youth education initiatives in her name.
To the Zheng family, we offer our deepest condolences. Words cannot fully capture the sadness we feel at the loss of such a bright and promising young soul. Barbara’s impact on her friends, family, and community was immeasurable, and her memory will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew her. Barbara’s spirit will always be with you, and may you find strength in each other as you navigate through this difficult time.
We also want to extend our sympathy to the teachers and students of Charles E. Brown Middle School. Barbara’s absence will be deeply felt in the halls she once walked, and her friends and classmates will carry her memory with them in the years to come. May you all find solace in the love and support of one another. May Barbara’s light continue to shine brightly in all our lives, reminding us to live with kindness, curiosity, and love, just as she did. Rest in peace, Barbara. You will never be forgotten.
